It's Five O'Clock Somewhere

The main issue with the Social Judgment theory is based on the social norm approach. This approach contends that if someone provides true norms or tends that people will understand the actual social norms. Then, they used the horrible example of college and underage drinking. This is definitely the worst possible example as college students view things somewhat differently when compared to what may be the “societal norms”.

The idea was put forth that, “the majority of the student population engages in healthy behavior…..However, most of this population is thought to exist in a state of pluralistic ignorance” (Allen, Atkin, Hembroff, Martell, Smith, 2006, p. 142). This quote shows that the idea behind this theory is that most of the students in college understand of the social norms while others are merely binge drinking and engaging in other erratic and risky activity because they simply do not understand the norms. I think this is ridiculous. College student have an understanding, and I am sure they are simply ignoring them.

How many times have people heard, “The time of your life,” or “You are only young once”? Most college students are living it up as these will be some of the last times in their lives where they will have limited responsibility. They are still sheltered to an extent from the big, bad world, and therefore, they have a skewed view of real world consequences. While they are in college, they have an invincible view of themselves and their health and most know that this is just college and a time to enjoy themselves. I personally do not believe that college students believe the weekend starts on Wednesday night.

This theory is based on the ideal that showing college student the true social norms that they will change their activities. This is incorrect when compared with the idea of the social judgment theory which states, “the effect of a persuasive message on a particular issue depends on the way that the receiver evaluates the position of the message” (Allen, Atkin, Hembroff, Martell, Smith, 2006, p. 142). This shows the problem with dealing with college age students as they are likely to take the rebellion stance that these are simply adults who are interested in control and safety and things that frankly, college students are not extraordinarily concerned with at this point in their lives. They want to have fun while they are young, because that is the message that they have heard their entire lives.

Motivation in a Lazy Society

Motivation is sometimes hard to define except in certain situations. Many people feel that motivation is different to many people and I feel that the statement is accurate. Different people are motivated by different things. So, the question is, what motivates people?

Motivation is tricky for some and easy to explain for others. Personally, I define motivation as the important things in life that drive you or others to do something. The drive is obviously the action you take when driven by the stimulus that causes you to want to complete something. As discussed by Shah and Shah, “there is an arousal of need so urgent, that the bearer has to venture in search to satisfy it” (Shah & Shah, 2007).

The next idea is what motivates people? Well, to understand that, you must understand the different types of motivation. Shah and Shah discuss the following types of motivation:

Achievement Motivation: If you are concerned with your goals and working towards a definitive finish line, then your motivation is closely related to achievement motivation.

Affiliation Motivation: This is close to a desire to belong. People often want to associate with similar people and personalities.

Competence Motivation: This is the drive or desire to understand and develop one’s skills at something. They want to understand and raise their level of awareness and expertise in something.

Power Motivation: This is an important type of motivation for managers and people that want to drive change. People are motivated to use their influence to change things and gain power or the upper hand in a situation.

Attitude Motivation: This is a type of motivation when people are driven to work to define themselves. They are driven and work based on their beliefs or ideas and work towards a goal as their attitude pushes them to action.

Incentive Motivation: This is similar to a salary or sales bonus, when someone works and receives an incentive for their work. Some people can be motivated by this. Many people say money is a great motivator, and often, it is.

Fear Motivation: Has anyone seen Glengarry Glen Ross? The boss screaming at you to make sales and close or you are fired gives people some very serious motivation. They are required to act or are afraid that they may lose their job which causes them to act.

Looking at my work situation, I would say that I am most motivated by achievement. I want to move up within my company and have been looking at various Area manager jobs. In order to become an area manager, one must have experience inside and outside of facilities as well as attain an advanced degree. I have completed both of those and would like to become the youngest vice president in the history of my company. This is currently the most important aspect of motivation to me as I am concerned and driven to succeed and work my way up in my corporation.

Musarra Blog Assignment 2-2

There are different areas that are important for listening. When it comes to listening, it is important for both the sender and receiver of the message to play a role. This shows how important it is that communication is a two way street.

Lu referenced the importance of listening and the lack of listening and the problems that could be caused. When reviewing this work, it became apparent that communication is based on effective listening and that effective listening involves a few different steps. Effective listening can involve certain characteristics and or steps that require the listener to take an active role in a conversation without possibly saying anything.

Listening and communication are important when it comes to my workplace. There are constantly projects and initiatives that require meetings and leadership where it is important to work with others and effectively communicate with one another. These teams and their success hinge on the ability of the members to communicate with one another and effectively listen to one another. If the team members do not listen to one another, then there will be many messages floating around without people listening or receiving the message that was offered.

“The human process of efficient listening requires selection, segregation, and integration of information at a fast speed” (Lu, 2005). This quote discusses the importance of the selection process of listening and the deciphering of codes and non-verbal cues in an attempt to understand the message. This is obviously the most important thing for a person in a working environment as communication within the workplace does not simply end with listening. The person needs to be able to listen and comprehend and then possibly take another step towards a solution when working in a team.

In my workplace, it is important for communication to play a major role with any process and procedural changes as well as when working in teams on a problem. Effectively communicating with one another and listening to one another in a team is clearly an aspect of teamwork that many people need in order to be successful. At work, communication must be at the forefront of any meeting or team in order for the team’s goals or problem to be realized or solved.

At my workplace, I will definitely attempt to be a better listener in the future and make sure that listening becomes the most important aspect of communication as without listening communication is a waste of time and a failure. With the important tasks as work that I am put in charge of, I feel that I need to inform my teams regarding the importance of listening within the group as well as to effectively communicate in all aspects of their life.

Musarra Assignment 1-3

Welcome to my Blog everyone.

I have to say that I normally have a great deal to say, but when puting this in writing it is a little different. I am a graduate of Franklin University and the Business Administration program. I enjoyed my time with the University and look forward to moving forward with my education.

I am very interested in Politics and very interested in the upcoming Presidential Election. I feel that politics are similar to Marketing and communication in many ways. They are both areas that are helpful, but many people would rather deal without all of the fluff.

While considering this coming election, I have been reviewing the different foreign relations policies that each nominee and party CLAIM to be adhering to. Also, I have been greatly interested in the recent economic developments as I am sure many of you are as well. This personal blog regarding my political interests is just a way to let you all know what I have been interested in recently, and what I will be looking forward to in the future.

Anyways, I look forward to working with some of you and meeting many of you.

Talk with you all soon.
