Musarra Blog Assignment 2-2

There are different areas that are important for listening. When it comes to listening, it is important for both the sender and receiver of the message to play a role. This shows how important it is that communication is a two way street.

Lu referenced the importance of listening and the lack of listening and the problems that could be caused. When reviewing this work, it became apparent that communication is based on effective listening and that effective listening involves a few different steps. Effective listening can involve certain characteristics and or steps that require the listener to take an active role in a conversation without possibly saying anything.

Listening and communication are important when it comes to my workplace. There are constantly projects and initiatives that require meetings and leadership where it is important to work with others and effectively communicate with one another. These teams and their success hinge on the ability of the members to communicate with one another and effectively listen to one another. If the team members do not listen to one another, then there will be many messages floating around without people listening or receiving the message that was offered.

“The human process of efficient listening requires selection, segregation, and integration of information at a fast speed” (Lu, 2005). This quote discusses the importance of the selection process of listening and the deciphering of codes and non-verbal cues in an attempt to understand the message. This is obviously the most important thing for a person in a working environment as communication within the workplace does not simply end with listening. The person needs to be able to listen and comprehend and then possibly take another step towards a solution when working in a team.

In my workplace, it is important for communication to play a major role with any process and procedural changes as well as when working in teams on a problem. Effectively communicating with one another and listening to one another in a team is clearly an aspect of teamwork that many people need in order to be successful. At work, communication must be at the forefront of any meeting or team in order for the team’s goals or problem to be realized or solved.

At my workplace, I will definitely attempt to be a better listener in the future and make sure that listening becomes the most important aspect of communication as without listening communication is a waste of time and a failure. With the important tasks as work that I am put in charge of, I feel that I need to inform my teams regarding the importance of listening within the group as well as to effectively communicate in all aspects of their life.
